The Education Study Commission was created by the Legislature in 1969 (Ala. Act 15, p. 35 [1969]) to analyze and evaluate education policies and programs and to make recommendations to the legislature for changes and improvements. The Commission consisted of eight members, one from each Congressional district, staggered into two, four, six, and eight-year terms, all appointed by the Governor. The Commission received appropriations from the Alabama Special Education Trust Fund and was authorized to accept gifts and requests. The collection consists of scattered and incomplete administrative files of the Commission and its committees, covering correspondence, budgets, reports, minutes, inventories, speeches, and photographs. There are file copies of Commission Reports that are duplicate copies of those accessioned as State Publications. Some correspondence is indexed by county, city, committee, and surname. Most files cover the 1968-1969 period, with one box covering 1971-1981.
